Yeshiva at the Jersey Shore Wins New Jersey Torah Bowl Championship in First Year Of Competition
Yeshiva at the Jersey Shore (YJS) Girls Team was crowned Division Champions at the final Torah Bowl competition held on March 7, 2013. Despite being a new team, in their first year of Torah Bowl Competition, the YJS Girls’ Team won the Championship of the Western (New Jersey) Torah Bowl Division.
The team is comprised of seventh graders Tova Braun and Amy Shapiro, and fifth graders Shari Samuel and Serah Shohet. The girls’ team was able to defeat Bruriah, RPRY, Kushner Academy, and reigning champs Yeshiva of North Jersey. The YJS team will now go on to face other division champions from around the region.
The Boys’ Team from YJS lost in the final round of the championship to take second place. This, too, is an extraordinary accomplishment for a brand new team in the competition. The boys’ team members are eighth grader Robert Samuel, seventh graders Avi Braun, Aviel Fradkin, Dov Tuchman, Simcha Shron, and Yosef Friedman, and sixth graders Ariel Braun, Jacob Winters, Joel Paley and Shea Cornick.
Each year, students in grades 6-8 from elite yeshivot throughout NJ compete on Torah Bowl Teams. Competing in a Torah Bowl requires a tremendous amount of dedication. Throughout the season, the students, on their own time, need to diligently study the material which consists of an entire book of the Torah, complete with all text and every Rashi commentary. This year’s teams studied the book of Devarim (Deuteronomy).
Both teams are coached by Head of School, Rabbi Dr. Elie Tuchman, Nechama Levitan and Shira Tuchman. Morah Shira was herself a member of a high school championship Torah Bowl team. “The children have brought an overwhelming sense of pride and achievement to our school and our community,” said YJS Board President, Lisa Shapiro of Ocean Township.
Yeshiva at the Jersey Shore is a modern Orthodox day school, based in Ashkenazi tradition, providing excellence in Judaic and general studies in a progressive integrated Hebrew and English curriculum. Its child-centered curriculum is designed to nurture every student’s intellect and unique sense of self.
